ALIMA in Burkina Faso
Since 2015, the escalation of violence in Burkina Faso has led to an unprecedented deterioration in the humanitarian situation in the country. In 2023, OCHA estimates that 4.9 million people will need humanitarian aid (Vs 3.8M in 2022 and 3.5M in 2021). The current crisis in Burkina Faso is by far the largest protection crisis in the Central Sahel (Mali, Niger and Burkina). Of the 1.5 million people internally displaced by conflict and violence in the sub-region, 69% (1.03 million) are in Burkina Faso. The National Emergency Relief Council (CONASUR) as of March 31, 2023, has 2,065 IDPs.
In Burkina, ALIMA works in consortium with Keoogo and SOS Médecins BF to provide a quality medical response adapted to each humanitarian crisis situation. Keoogo is a national association which offers, directly or through partnerships, protection, medical care and rehabilitation services to particularly vulnerable children. SOS Médecins Burkina Faso is a national association which intervenes in health emergency situations, malnutrition and the care of people affected by HIV/AIDS infection in populations at risk.
ALIMA in partnership with UGP-PFS, GRET and ISSP, has obtained funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to implement an innovative approach which consists of supporting and including vulnerable families in the monitoring of 2 child’s first years (1,000 days), the most important period of growth and development. A total of 10,000 identified mother-child couples should benefit from the program over 3 years. This project, based in Ouagadougou, is based on the national social safety net program and aims to improve the nutritional status of these households and facilitate their access to a comprehensive package of health services.
In addition, ALIMA obtained in April 2022 ECHO funding (for 02 years) for the implementation of a pilot project to investigate solutions for the reduction of two emblematic packaging in the medico-nutritional response that are the packaging of plumpy nut and medicinal dispensing sachets.
