Life Helpers Initiative (LHI) is a National Non-Governmental organization based in Nigeria that is registered to operate across various states. Since 2004, LHI has been active in the Northeast (Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Plateau States), Northwest (Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, and Zamfara States), Ebonyi State, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Guided by its mission, LHI is committed to empowering children, youth, women, and communities in all aspects of life.

Position: Referral Nurse
Report to: Nutrition Lead
Location: Damaturu LGA, Yobe State
Duration: May-September 2026

LHI works across five thematic areas: Health, Education, Livelihood, Gender & Social Inclusion, and

Agriculture. The organization is currently implementing a project, which is funded by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) as a consortium to be implemented in Borno and Yobe states by Save the Children,  Greencode, EYN, and Life Helpers; LHI will focus its implementation in Yobe, along with Save the Children as the prime partner.

The UNOCHA project, which is aimed at humanitarian response to provide life-saving integrated health and nutrition interventions for women and children facing acute malnutrition in Yobe and Borno, will be executed for a period of 5 months

These activities will be focused on Mass MUAC screening, MIYCN, Tom Brown, and management of malnutrition, amongst others.

Job Summary (Referral Nurse)

The Referral Nurse will be responsible for facilitating timely and appropriatREFERRALe referral of patients within the healthcare system, ensuring continuity of care and adherence to established clinical protocols. The role involves coordinating with health facilities, community structures, and project teams to identify, document, and track referred cases, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The Referral Nurse will support case management, provide basic clinical care where necessary, and ensure proper documentation and reporting of all referrals. He/she will also strengthen linkages between communities and health facilities, conduct follow-ups on referred cases, and contribute to improving access to quality healthcare services.

The position requires strong communication, coordination, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in humanitarian or resource-limited settings.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Nursing (BSc Nursing, RN, or equivalent) from a recognized institution
  • Valid practicing license with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ clinical experience, preferably in primary healthcare, maternal and child health, or nutrition programs
  • Previous experience working with an NGO or in a humanitarian/development setting is an added advantage
  • Strong knowledge of referral systems, case management, and patient follow-up
  • Experience in community-based health programs and engagement with local stakeholders
  • Good documentation, reporting, and data management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and coordination skills
  • Ability to work in remote or resource-limited settings
  • knowledge of local languages (e.g., Hausa, Kanuri) is an added advantage
  • Experience in northeast Nigeria is an added advantage.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and time-management abilities.
