Doctors Without Borders, an international humanitarian medical association created in 1971, provides medical assistance to populations whose lives are threatened: mainly in the event of armed conflicts, but also epidemics, pandemics, natural disasters or exclusion from care.
In collaboration with the Emergency Cell, the Medical Coordinator defines and implements the medical-operational strategy of the’ emergency response. He/she is responsible for the planning and coordination of all medical activities and resources. He/she could be deployed as a medical coordinator, medical focal point or medical resource for exploratory missions; and can be deployed for’urgences interventions managed by the emergency cell or’urgences interventions managed by one of the regular cells.
Main responsibilities:
- Defines, monitors and updates the medical strategy of’emergency interventions, translates the needs into medical strategy that takes into account the realistic aspect, priorities and resources needed to appropriately meet the needs of the identified populations. This includes the ability to quickly assess a’ emergency situation and to propose creative but realistic operations and the ability to do epidemiological studies.
- Ensure the relevance and quality of medical interventions.
- Plays the role of leader in a multi-disciplinary team, able to’ engage a team in discussions and decision-making.
- Continuously monitors the medical and humanitarian needs of the population.
- Responsible for supervising and monitoring all medical aspects of operations.
- In collaboration with the’ HR team, participates in the definition and planning of international and national medical teams.
- In collaboration with the’ HR team, defines and implements the health and safety policy of the national and international teams of the mission.
- Defines other necessary resources (pharmacy and medical equipment, in collaboration with pharmacy and logistics teams), procedures and protocols. Guarantees the preparation of medical orders with the Pharmacist and the logistician and submits requests for’achats to the headquarters. Is responsible for the proper management of the pharmacy (in collaboration with the pharmacist coordinator).
- Produces reports on the evolution of’ activities from a medical point of view, including analyses of MSF medical data and other health actors as well as epidemiological data. Adapts the proposed strategy according to the’analysis made of these data.
- Responsible for the mission’s medical library. Informs the’medical team of the tools/materials and support documents at their disposal. S’ ensures that the medical documents available are up to date.
- In collaboration with the’ HR team, S’s is involved in the development of medical personnel through training opportunities, follow-up of objectives and evaluations. Identify the potentials to follow.
- Represents MSF to the health authorities, up to’ at the level of the Ministry of Health. Created the network with all relevant actors (other MSF, UN, NGOs, local organizations, donors, authorities, universities and researchers) with the aim of producing a detailed analysis of the medical-humanitarian situation, strengthening the’ impact of medical interventions and being an actor of advocacy through our medical operations.
Profile sought
Experience
- Essential, be validated MSF Medical Coordinator and have experience of’ at least one year in a similar position with MSF and field experiences with MSF and/or other NGOs.
- Experiences in different types of mission (Epidemic, conflict, natural disaster, population displacement)
- Experience in an emergency context’

Contractual conditions
- Field post with visits to the headquarters in Paris.
- CDD full-time (12 months, 100%) with possible extension.
- Gross salary according to MSF field grid, level 14
- Special benefits, emergency contract
- Mutual and Per Diem in the countries of’intervention and at headquarters according to the regulations in force.
