Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international humanitarian medical association created in 1971, provides medical assistance to populations in need: most often in the event of armed conflict, but also during epidemics, natural disasters and for those excluded from healthcare. MSF France currently works in 30 different countries.

We are urgently looking for Clinical Psychologists – F/M
Operational contexts

Psychologists perform various tasks at MSF, depending on the project and the context: within a hospital program, psychiatric consultations, treatment of specific trauma (armed conflicts, sexual violence), certain illnesses (AIDS, tuberculosis) and/or treatment of minors.

Psychologists collaborate with MSF health staff both in providing clinical support and in managing and training locally employed staff. The ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team is essential. In the majority of our programmes, it is the national staff (usually psychologists) who ensure the continuity of care for our patients.

International mental health personnel are responsible for the following tasks:

  • Participate in the planning, organization and coordination of mental health activities, in close collaboration with other members of the medical team.
  • Supervise daily mental health activities and patient support according to MSF protocols and standards.
  • Ensure that MSF medical guidelines and treatments (psychotropic medications listed in MSF standard guidelines) are available and well understood.
  • Provide support to the project and the team by sharing ideas on how to improve our care, in line with MSF’s strategy and objectives.
  • Supervise, in close coordination with the HR department, the associated processes (recruitment, training/induction, assessment, detection of potential, development) of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to define human resources needs and identify the required knowledge.
  • Providing clinical supervision to mental health clinicians
  • If necessary, provide psychological support to patients (individual/group) according to MSF protocols in order to improve the conditions of mental health care for patients and improve their condition.
  • If necessary, refer patients to the program psychiatrist or to appropriate structures identified.
  • Compile data and statistics related to mental health activities to integrate them into the project activity report.
  • Ensure that patient information remains confidential.
  • Work with the medical team leader to resolve issues and provide the best possible medical care.

A mental health team usually consists of a psychiatrist and a psychologist.

Psychologists usually work with interpreters. It is necessary to ensure the quality of their work and their emotional capacity in order to have objective translations.

Experience/training:

  • At least two years of full-time employment in the field of clinical psychology (excluding professional experience acquired during the degree) after obtaining the equivalent of the DESS or Master 2 in clinical psychology in France;
  • Experience as a team/individual supervisor of other mental health clinicians is highly valued and will be prioritized;
  • Experience in the specific management of trauma among displaced populations, conflicts, sexual violence, etc., including minors and women, is desirable;
  • International experience with NGOs is an asset.

Skills and competencies:

  • IT skills required to manage the team and data;
  • Experience in management and teaching is an asset. In addition, training or experience related to infants, children and adolescents, training or experience in traumatology and training in transcultural clinic are considered an asset;

LANGUAGES :

  • You speak and write French fluently
  • English (level B2) and/or Arabic are a plus.

Terms :

Status :

  • Salary status according to the MSF salary scale and your previous experience in international NGOs, if applicable.
  • MSF provides: transportation, accommodation and a monthly per diem. Insurance: medical coverage, repatriation.

Locations: Africa, Middle East, Europe, Asia.

Conditions: Minimum availability of 6 to 9 months.
