JOB DESCRIPTION

I. Context of the mission

Medici del Mondo Italia is the Italian section of the international network of Médecins du Monde (MdM). The association was established in December 2020 and formally joined the MdM network in October 2021.

MdM Italia pursues social solidarity goals and acts to guarantee the right and access to health in Italy and around the world.

The lines of intervention pursued by the association to date are access to health for migrants and vulnerable groups living in precarious housing and environmental situations.

In Calabria, Doctors of the World is present in Reggio Calabria and surrounding areas during and after the landing, to rescue, visit and support migrants arriving or temporarily hosted in first reception centers.

We carry out psychosocial, education and health promotion activities in CAS in the Province of Reggio Calabria.

We support migrants in accessing healthcare, advocate for more flexible and inclusive healthcare systems, and train healthcare workers on how to effectively engage with migrant communities.

In Arghillà, on the outskirts of Reggio Calabria, Doctors of the World intends to guarantee access to health to people living in conditions of vulnerability and socio-economic exclusion. The project also aims to strengthen the support and care capacity of the institutions and health associations present in the area. The Doctors of the World staff present in Arghillà offers psychosocial support activities, guarantees medical visits, health education activities and screening with a focus on sexual and reproductive health.

II. Line management

The Doctor’s contact person at project level is the Project Manager who has direct responsibility for the implementation of the activities; the technical contact person is the Medical Coordinator.

III. General Responsibilities

  • Supports the analysis of training needs in different contexts/groups and actively participates in the planning and organization of training and workshops for healthcare personnel, reception operators and cultural mediators.
  • Contributes to the creation/adaptation of health information and service orientation materials.
  • Contributes to data collection, processing and reporting.
  • Supports the Project Manager in relations with local health services.

III. Specific responsibilities

Migration Program

  • Supports USMAF health personnel in providing medical assistance to migrants during landings in the ports of Reggio Calabria and Roccella Ionica.
  • After disembarkation, it offers medical assistance to migrants temporarily hosted in first reception centres, with particular attention to identifying vulnerabilities or situations that require referral to hospital or specialized centres.
  • Organizes awareness and health education sessions for groups of people hosted in CAS in the Province of Reggio Calabria and collaborates in identifying specific vulnerabilities.

Access to health

In the context of the Arghillà district (Reggio Calabria):

  • Conducts community outreach activities by offering a mobile clinic service based on the schedule agreed with the Project Manager and the needs of the community.
  • Supports the referral system for sending cases requiring second-level investigations or treatment to specialists/or specialized facilities.
  • Organizes awareness-raising and health education sessions for groups of women and/or minors and young adults, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health.
  • It supports the organization, with local health organizations, of screening activities with a particular focus on sexual and reproductive health.
  • Support the rest of the team, where necessary, in organizing and implementing community mobilization activities.

IV. Required skills

  • Degree in medicine and surgery.
  • Registration in the Italian medical register.
  • At least 3 years of work experience.

V. Preferential requirements

  • Specialization in Internal Medicine or Hygiene and Preventive Medicine
  • Knowledge of issues of access to health in migration
  • Teamwork experience
  • Knowledge of the issues MdM Italia deals with and interest in working in the sector of protection of the right to health
  • Adherence to the values ​​and militant approach of the MdM network
  • Ability to work independently in Italian and English (written and spoken). Knowledge of French or another language is an added value
  • Excellent ability to work towards objectives; time management, planning, monitoring and evaluation of own work
  • Experience in mental health and reproductive health. Experience in projects to prevent, combat and respond to gender violence
  • Knowledge or work experience in the Calabrian context
  • Equipped with a driving licence B
