The Lab Business Development and Specimen Reception Unit oversees and coordinates icddr,b’s laboratory sample collection centres across the city. The unit ensures the efficient delivery of laboratory outreach services, including patient and client registration, identity verification, billing, specimen collection and reception, sample tracking, safe handling and transportation, report delivery, and client support. It also ensures compliance with standard operating procedures, infection prevention and control measures, quality standards, confidentiality requirements, and established turnaround times.

Position Description:

The Health Assistant reporting to the Consultant will be mainly responsible for performing following duties and responsibilities:

• Verify patient/client identity using standard protocols, review test requisitions for completeness, explain procedures, and obtain informed consent where required.
• Assess patients’/clients’ clinical condition, including fasting status, allergies, medications, bleeding tendency, relevant medical history, and vital signs; promptly report abnormal findings.
• Perform venipuncture, capillary puncture, and other specimen collection procedures, including the collection of blood, urine, stool, sputum, and various swab samples.
• Ensure the correct specimen type, volume, container, and collection method; label samples accurately at the bedside or collection point to minimize pre-analytical errors.
• Follow aseptic techniques, infection prevention and control guidelines, universal precautions, and appropriate PPE requirements during all procedures.
• Provide compassionate and professional care, particularly for pediatric, geriatric, critically ill, or anxious patients, while maintaining dignity, privacy, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
• Observe patients after specimen collection, ensure hemostasis, manage discomfort or adverse reactions, and provide first aid for emergencies such as fainting, bleeding, or allergic reactions.
• Perform ECG and assist healthcare professionals during endoscopy, ultrasound, and other diagnostic or clinical procedures as required.
• Ensure proper handling, storage, cold-chain maintenance, transportation, timely laboratory delivery, and monitoring of specimens for hemolysis, clotting, contamination, or other quality concerns.
• Maintain accurate records and sample-tracking logs, manage equipment and supplies, safely dispose of sharps and biomedical waste, follow SOPs, and participate in quality control, audits, and regulatory or accreditation compliance activities.

Required qualifications and experience:

• Diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery/BSc in Nursing with valid registration from the Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council (BNMC) with good academic record.
• At least 2 years of experiences in renowned hospital/diagnostic centre;

Number of Position: 02 posts

Contract Type and Duration:

• Short-Term; duration will be 11 months with a possibility of extension, subject to availability of funds and performance.

Salary & Benefits:

• Tk. 41,522/- per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances;
• Festival bonus, income tax paid by icddr,b, and subsidized canteen; Transport and daycare facilities are subject to space availability.
