GOAL has been working in Syria since 2013, responding to the acute needs of conflict-affected communities. GOAL is working in Idleb Governance, both through direct implementation and through partners, delivering food, non-food programming to highly vulnerable populations, and provision of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) through support to Water units, as well as emergency support to recently displaced homes.

GOAL has been working in North Aleppo Governorate since 2019, through direct implementation and through partners, delivering food, non-food programming to highly vulnerable populations, as well as emergency support for recently displaced household.

Job purpose: the goal of the work
The Nutrition Community Worker is responsible for the direct implementation of activities under GOAL’s nutrition activities in Idleb. The Nutrition Community Worker, together with the Nutrition Officer and other members of the Nutrition team, will provide technical support to beneficiaries to contribute to the reduction of malnutrition and the realization of positive nutrition results for the projects. The aim is for the Nutrition Community Worker to build capacity in people which will allow them to understand the causes, prevention methods and treatment of malnutrition for children U5s and PLW, at household level.The Nutrition Community Worker will also be responsible for regular nutrition service mapping in GOAL and its partners area of operation and establishing and maintaining a referral mechanism under the direction of the Nutrition Officer between GOAL’s other programs e.g. food security and nutrition and between GOAL and partners or external action
The Nutrition Community Worker will report to the Nutrition Officer and will be responsible for ensuring project activities are achieved within agreed timeframes, budgets and according to GOAL’s standards and donor regulations. He / she will contribute to robust process and impact monitoring and support the adaptive management of the nutrition program.
The community worker in the field of nutrition is responsible for the direct implementation of activities within the nutrition activities of Gul in Idlib. The community nutrition worker, along with the nutritionist and other members of the nutrition team, will provide technical support to beneficiaries to contribute to reducing malnutrition and achieving positive project outcomes. The goal is for the community worker in the field of nutrition to build the capacity of people, which will allow them to understand the causes of malnutrition for children under the age of five and pregnant and lactating women at the family level and ways to prevent and treat them. The nutrition community worker will also be responsible for mapping regular nutrition services in Ghoul and its partner operations area and creating \ maintaining a referral mechanism under the supervision of the nutrition official among other Ghoul programs for example: food security and nutrition and between Ghoul and external partners or actors.
The Nutrition Community Worker will report to the Nutrition Officer and will be responsible for ensuring that project activities are achieved within agreed timeframes and budgets and in accordance with Gul standards and donor regulations. It will contribute to a robust methodology and impact monitoring and support adaptive management of the nutrition program.
Duties, objectives and competencies
- Disseminate key tailored messages that will support improved maternal, infant and young child feeding and care practices in the community.
- Assist in the development and Distribute communication products (leaflets / SMS messages / community announcements as appropriate) on what the LNS-SQ is, who it is for, and why it is important for children aged 6-59 months to consume it daily and not share it with other members of the household.
- Provide context specific training to homes with U5 and / or PLW, on how to identify acute malnutrition at home and the appropriate actions to take if malnutrition is identified.
- Distribute and monitor the distribution of MUAC maps to target families, ensuring HH have received and are able to use the tape and identify acute malnutrition correctly.
- Ensure that HHs are aware of where to access available therapeutic care services when acute malnutrition is identified and monitored if they are successful in receiving access and therapeutic care services, if required.
- Conduct refresher training as necessary for homes.
- Working with GOAL’s field-based Social Workers refer cases of acute malnutrition to local health actors and follow-up on the referred cases.
- Conduct home visits for problem cases (i.e., absentees, defaulters, non-response to treatment) and encourage return to service.
- Collect data for the nutrition service mapping in GOAL and partner locations and ensure it is routinely updated so the referral information provided to beneficiaries is accurate.
- Under the supervision of the Nutrition Officer establish and monitor referrals between GOAL internal programs, between GOAL and its partners, particularly its partners that provide nutrition services and also referrals between GOAL & its partners and external Nutrition actors.
- Ensure that all relevant information is collected for reporting purposes on a timely basis, and compile regular monitoring reports, as agreed with the Nutrition Deputy Manager.
- Ensure that policies and guidelines as laid down in GOAL manuals and policies are adhered to at all times.
- Ensure adherence to GOAL’s Code of Conduct and Child Protection Policy and standards of integrity, as well as uphold GOAL’s whistleblowing mechanisms.

- Provide context-specific training for families with children under the age of five and / or pregnant and lactating women, on how to detect acute malnutrition at home and appropriate measures to take if malnutrition is discovered.
- Distribute and monitor the distribution of mid-arm tapes to the targeted families, ensure that families have access to the tape and are able to use it and properly detect acute malnutrition.
- Ensure that families are aware of where to access the curative care services available when identifying acute malnutrition and monitoring whether they have succeeded in obtaining curative care services, if necessary.
- Conduct training as necessary for families as necessary.
- Work with Gul’s field social workers to refer cases of acute malnutrition to local health authorities and follow up on cases referred.
- Carry out home visits to cases where problems occur (i.e. absent and backward and not respond to treatment) and encourage return to service.
- Collect data to map nutrition services at Ghoul sites and partners and ensure that they are routinely updated so that referral information provided to beneficiaries is accurate.
- Under the supervision of the Nutrition Officer, the establishment and control of referrals between Ghoul’s internal programs, between Gul and its partners, especially its partners who provide nutrition services as well as referrals between Gul and its partners and external actors in the field of nutrition.
- Ensure that all relevant information is collected for the purposes of timely reporting, and that regular monitoring reports are compiled, as agreed with the Deputy Director of Nutrition.
- Ensure compliance with the policies and guidelines set out in Gul’s guides and policies at all times.
- Ensure compliance with the Gul Code of Conduct, Child Protection Policy and Integrity Standards, as well as support mechanisms for reporting violations of Ghoul.
- Guidance and implementation of standard operating procedures and outreach materials for the program as appropriate
- Other related tasks at the request of the nutrition official.
Requirements (essential)
- At least third year university student or institute Certificate.
- Minimum 2-year experience of working in nutrition interventions related to Pregnant and Lactating Women and Children Under 5.
- The candidate should have experience of working as a team member or any relevant position for at least one year.
- Minimum 4 years ’ experience of working in NGOs.
- Female only.

- University student in at least the third year or institute certificate.
- At least two years of experience working in nutritional interventions related to pregnant and lactating women and children under the age of five.
- The candidate should have at least one year experience working as a team member or any related position.
