Job Title: Senior Registrar – Urologist

Job Purpose

• The Senior Registrar Urologist will provide high-quality, patient-centred urological care under the supervision of Consultant Urologists while undertaking advanced specialist training.
• The role holder will assess and manage elective and emergency urological conditions, perform procedures according to demonstrated competence, support junior medical staff, and contribute to clinical governance, teaching, research, and multidisciplinary care.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

Clinical Practice:

• Assess and manage patients with elective and emergency urological conditions across outpatient, inpatient, theatre, and emergency settings.
• Develop evidence-based treatment plans and provide coordinated care from initial consultation through surgery, recovery, discharge, and follow-up.
• Manage common urological emergencies, including renal colic, urinary retention, haematuria, urosepsis, and genitourinary trauma.
• Participate in urology clinics, ward rounds, theatre lists, on-call services, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
• Communicate diagnoses, treatment options, procedural risks, expected outcomes, and follow-up requirements clearly to patients and families.

Procedural and Surgical Responsibilities:

• Perform or assist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as cystoscopy, ureteric stenting, prostate biopsy, stone procedures, tumour resection, and open or minimally invasive urological surgery, in line with approved privileges and demonstrated competence.
• Review relevant imaging, laboratory results, histopathology, and urodynamic findings to guide diagnosis and treatment.
• Apply safe perioperative practices and escalate complex or high-risk cases appropriately.
• Undertake surgical procedures under the supervision of a Consultant Urologist, with progressive responsibility based on assessed competence.

Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement:

• Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical and operative documentation and ensure safe handover of care.
• Comply with hospital policies, clinical protocols, infection prevention standards, ethical requirements, and applicable regulatory standards.
• Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, incident reviews, and quality-improvement initiatives.
• Contribute to the development and review of urology protocols, care pathways, and patient-safety measures.

Teaching Research and Professional Development:

• Contribute to departmental teaching, case presentations, grand rounds, journal clubs, and continuing medical education activities.
• Support the training and supervision of junior doctors, medical students, and other members of the clinical team, appropriate to the seniority of the role.
• Participate in clinical research and scholarly activities, including presentations and publications where applicable.
• Maintain continuing professional development and remain current with advances in urological practice.

Training and Supervision:

• Participate fully in the accredited residency training programme and meet all clinical, academic, logbook, and examination requirements.
• Provide day-to-day supervision and teaching to Registrars, Medical Officers, House Officers, and medical students.
• Present cases at grand rounds, morbidity and mortality meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, and journal clubs.

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
• Successful completion of the Part I or Membership examination in Surgery of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, West African College of Surgeons, or an accepted equivalent.
• Current enrolment in an accredited Urology residency training programme.
• Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and a valid practising licence.
• Minimum of four years of postgraduate surgical training, including significant experience in Urology.
• Demonstrated experience assessing and managing elective and emergency urological conditions.
• Practical experience assisting with and performing common diagnostic, endoscopic, and operative urological procedures under appropriate supervision.
• Demonstrated commitment to residency training, teaching junior colleagues, clinical audit, research, patient safety, and professional development.
• Strong communication, teamwork, clinical judgement, and decision-making skills.

Must have skills:

• Demonstrated experience assessing and managing elective and emergency urological conditions.
