Mission and objectives
The United Nations Children’s Fund – UNICEF – was created in 1946 to care for child victims of World War II, and in 1953, UNICEF became a permanent agency of the United Nations. Since then, its mission has been to ensure compliance with the rights of all boys and girls, particularly the most vulnerable and unprotected. UNICEF has been working in Mexico since 1954 in coordination with the government, civil society organizations and the private sector, and guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child to ensure that all children and adolescents see their rights guaranteed. Our efforts focus on ensuring that all our programs and initiatives reach those who are most disadvantaged and vulnerable during their childhood and adolescence.Context
Mexico faces challenges in reported vaccination rates, which makes it difficult to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in health, specifically SDG 3, which seeks to guarantee a healthy life and promote well-being for all at all ages. In line with UNICEF’s health and vaccination strategy, it is essential to strengthen health systems and improve equitable access to vaccination services, especially in vulnerable populations. This requires comprehensive approaches that include staff training, infrastructure and community participation to achieve the proposed global goals. According to WHO data, Mexico ranks second in Latin America with the highest number of children with zero doses of vaccines. In 2023, around 316,830 children under one year of age (17% of the child population) did not receive any vaccine. None of the vaccines included in the national vaccination record reached 90% coverage, and only 42.6% of the children completed the complete vaccination schedule. This suboptimal coverage puts herd immunity at risk, essential to limit the transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. The lack of adequate immunization increases the susceptibility of the population, favoring the re-emergence of previously controlled pathologies. Furthermore, vaccine storage infrastructure is deficient, with unattended requisitions for refrigerators and materials necessary for proper vaccine preservation, especially in rural areas. This assignment from the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programfor its acronym in English), it seeks to support the work plan of the “Universal Vaccination Program”, to improve the conceptualization, design, execution, monitoring and evaluation processes of the budget program Pp E036. by the National Center for Health of Childhood and Adolescence (CENSIA).Task Description
