The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Consultant, Family Medicine

Job Purpose

  • The Consultant, Family Medicine, will provide comprehensive, patient-centered care to individuals and families across all age groups at AMCE.
  • This role involves managing acute and chronic conditions, promoting preventive health, and coordinating care with specialists.
  • The Consultant will lead a multidisciplinary team, mentor junior staff, and ensure adherence to clinical and ethical standards.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities
Comprehensive Patient Care:

  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients with undifferentiated and chronic conditions.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans for acute and chronic diseases.
  • Provide preventive health services, including vaccinations and screenings.
  • Manage complex comorbidities and polypharmacy cases.
  • Ensure continuity of care through follow-up visits and care coordination.
  • Address psychosocial and lifestyle factors impacting health.

Chronic Disease Management:

  • Monitor and optimize treatment for chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension).
  • Utilize evidence-based guidelines for disease management.
  • Educate patients on self-management strategies.
  • Coordinate with specialists for complex cases.
  • Track and report clinical outcomes for quality improvement.
  • Implement telehealth solutions for remote monitoring where applicable.

Preventive Health and Wellness:

  • Deliver age-appropriate preventive care (e.g., cancer screenings, immunizations).
  • Promote health education and lifestyle modifications.
  • Conduct risk assessments for hereditary and lifestyle-related diseases.
  • Organize community health outreach programs.
  • Document preventive interventions in patient records.
  • Align practices with international preventive health standards.

Team Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Lead multidisciplinary team rounds and case discussions.
  • Mentor junior doctors and medical students.
  • Foster a collaborative environment with nursing and allied health staff.
  • Participate in hospital committees (e.g., quality improvement, infection control).
  • Resolve conflicts and enhance team communication.
  • Advocate for patient-centered care models.

Communication and Patient Education:

  • Explain diagnoses, treatment options, and prognoses clearly.
  • Provide culturally sensitive care to a diverse patient population.
  • Ensure informed consent for procedures and treatments.
  • Counsel patients on medication adherence and side effects.
  • Address patient complaints and concerns empathetically.
  • Document patient interactions and education in the EHR.

Clinical Documentation and Compliance:

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and legible medical records.
  • Adhere to hospital coding and billing protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR).
  • Complete discharge summaries and referrals within 24 hours.
  • Participate in clinical audits and peer reviews.
  • Update patient records with diagnostic results and treatment changes.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent Medical Degree.
  • Board certification or Fellowship in Family Medicine.
  • Valid medical licence to practise in Nigeria.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and managing acute and chronic conditions across all age groups.
  • Expertise in preventive medicine, including vaccinations, cancer screenings, and health promotion.
  • Ability to handle undifferentiated illnesses and complex comorbidities.

Must have skills:

  • Proficiency in diagnosing and managing acute and chronic conditions across all age groups.
