Context
Doctors of the World Italy is the Italian section of the international network of Médecins du Monde (MdM). The association was established in December 2020 and formally joined the MdM network in October 2021. MdM Italia pursues social solidarity goals and acts to guarantee the right and access to health in Italy and around the world. The lines of intervention pursued by the association to date are access to health for migrant people arriving and in transit in Italy and vulnerable groups living in situations of housing and environmental precariousness, with a specific focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights .
In Calabria, Doctors of the World is present in Reggio Calabria and surrounding areas during and after disembarkation, to rescue, visit and support migrants arriving or temporarily hosted in reception centres. We support migrants in accessing medical care, fight for health systems to be more flexible and inclusive, and train health workers on how to interact effectively with migrant communities.
In Arghillà, on the outskirts of Reggio Calabria, Medici del Mondo intends to guarantee access to health to people living in conditions of vulnerability and socio-economic exclusion. The project also aims to strengthen the support and care capacity of the institutions and health associations present in the area. The Medici del Mondo staff present in Arghillà offers psychosocial support activities for the younger segment of the population, guarantees medical visits, health education activities and screening.
