Médecins Sans Frontières, an international humanitarian medical association created in 1971, provides medical assistance to populations whose lives are threatened: mainly in the event of armed conflicts, but also epidemics, pandemics, natural disasters or even exclusion of care.
Plans, designs, manages, supervises and coordinates the overall deployment of medical content, strategies, activities and resources in missions in order to facilitate the delivery of quality medical care for patients and their communities, but also to improve the health of the population, its humanitarian conditions and disease prevention. The medical coordinator ensures the appropriate implementation and management of the medical aspects of **MSF** projects in the mission, thus ensuring the success of the planned objectives. He works in collaboration with the Head of Mission, the Medical Department and other local authorities, complying with the values and philosophy of **MSF**, its health policy, its protocols, its plans for ‘operation and remaining attentive to the medical and humanitarian situation in the country.
In collaboration with the Emergency Unit and the HOM, the Medical Coordinator defines and implements the medical-operational strategy of the emergency response. He/she is responsible for planning and coordinating all medical activities and resources. He/she could be deployed as a medical coordinator, medical focal point or medical resource for exploratory missions; and can be deployed for emergency interventions managed by the emergency unit or emergency interventions managed by one of the regular units.
Main responsibilities
Defines, monitors and updates the medical emergency response strategy, translates needs into a medical strategy that takes into account the realistic aspect, priorities and resources necessary to respond appropriately to the needs of identified populations.
This function involves the ability to quickly assess emergency situations, formulate innovative interventions while remaining pragmatic, as well as conduct rigorous epidemiological studies:
- Guarantees the relevance and quality of medical interventions.
- Plays the role of leader in a multidisciplinary team, capable of engaging a team in discussions and decision-making.
- Constantly monitors the medical and humanitarian needs of the population.
- Responsible for supervising and monitoring all medical aspects of operations.
- In collaboration with the HR team, participates in the definition and planning of international and national medical teams.
- In collaboration with the HR team, defines and implements the health and safety policy of the mission’s national and international teams.
- Defines other necessary resources (pharmacy and medical equipment, in collaboration with the pharmacy and logistics teams), procedures and protocols. Guarantees the preparation of medical orders with the Pharmacist and logistician and submits purchase requests to headquarters. Is responsible for the proper management of the pharmacy (in collaboration with the coordinating pharmacist).
- Analyze the evolution of activities from a medical and epidemiological point of view to adapt activities according to results
- In collaboration with the HR team, is involved in the development of medical personnel through training opportunities, monitoring of objectives and evaluations. Identifies potentials to follow.
- Represents MSF with health authorities, up to the level of the Ministry of Health. Created the network with all relevant actors (other MSF, UN, NGOs, local organizations, donors, authorities, universities and researchers) with the aim of producing a detailed analysis of the medical-humanitarian situation, strengthening the impact of medical interventions and be an actor in advocacy through our medical operations.
- Guarantor of the safeguarding aspect of its activity (patient safety, reporting of patient complaints…).
- Possibility also to do gap filling in regular mission
Profile sought
Experience :
- Essential, be validated as a Medical Coordinator in an international medical NGO
- At least one year’s experience in a similar position with MSF
- Experiences in different mission typologies (Epidemic, conflict, natural disaster, population displacement)
- Experience in a medical emergency context

- Very good knowledge of French (B2 minimum) and English (B2 minimum)
- Knowledge of other languages such as Arabic or Spanish is a plus
Terms of employment
Status: 12-month full-time fixed-term contract. Level 14 remuneration according to the MSF field salary scale and based on seniority and relevant experience for this position.
Terms : Field post with visits to headquarters in Paris. Health insurance, transport, accommodation and subsistence costs (perdiem) covered by MSF. Leave according to the MSF emergency contract break policy.
