HISTORY
Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, formerly University of Sokoto, is a research based public University located in the city of Sokoto, Nigeria. It is one of the second-generation universities established in 1975 by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The university was re-named after Usmanu Dan Fodiyo, the founder of the famous Sokoto Caliphate. Because of the increasing demand for University education and the limited infrastructure in the educational sector, the then Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Abdullahi Abdu Zuru constituted a seven- member committee to review a pilot project on Open and Distance Learning (ODL) initiated by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2010. The committee was chaired by Professor Mohammed Bello Agaie of blessed memory, which submitted its report on the 31st August, 2019. After deliberation of the committee’s submission, the new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lawal Suleiman Bilbis gave the committee additional mandate to develop implementation framework for ODL Programs for the University. After the passing away of Prof. Mohammed Bello Agaie, the chairmanship of the committee was transferred to Prof. Malami Muhammad Maishanu. The committee submitted it’s report to the Vice Chancellor on the 8th of May, 2019. After adoption by the Management of the University, the report was discussed by the senate at its 170th meeting, which culminated to the senate approval for the establishment of the Centre for Open and Distance Education (CODE). This development has made Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto a dual mode institution, providing academic programs both conventionally and through remote learning. The Centre has a Management Board empowered to formulate policies and a Management Team responsible for the implementation of its activities such as academic programs, examinations, and revenue generation.
The CODE is an organ of the university responsible for providing access to quality higher education at affordable costs with great flexibility through ODL. The Centre uses an e-learning platform as its teaching mode and provides a minimal physical interaction between the learners and the facilitators. It offers both undergraduate and graduate programs as well as professional certificates. A degree earned through the Centre is academically equivalent with that earned on the University’s main campus. Programs are offered online to give beneficiaries the flexibility to meet their other life’s demands while engaged in the pursuit of a degree or certificate of their choice.
