Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia – The MRC Unit The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of two research units established in sub- Saharan Africa by the Medical Research Council UK and is the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM’s single largest investment in medical research in a low and middle income country. MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM represents a unique concentration of scientific expertise and high quality research platforms in the West African region.

Title: Doctoral Training Scholarship Programme

Location: Gambia

Details of the Projects
Project 1:

• Analysis of immune cells and pathways in the development and outcome of post-TB lung disease

Essential Requirements

• MSc in Immunology or molecular biology
• Expertise in cellular and/or molecular immunology techniques
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Desirable:
• Experience with transcriptomic assays and analysis
• Experience with R-programming or similar
• Background in Tuberculosis research

Project 2:

• The effect of N-acetyl cysteine host-directed therapy on oxidative pathways leading to lung damage at diagnosis and post-treatment)

Essential Requirements

• MSc in Immunology or molecular biology
• Expertise in cellular and/or molecular immunology techniques
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Desirable:
• Experience with transcriptomic assays and analysis
• Experience with R-programming or similar
• Background in Tuberculosis research.

Terms and Conditions

• The studentship starts as soon as the recruitment is done, and will be full-time for four years, involving collaboration with the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at LSHTM and a European University.
• Full financial support will be provided.
