CONTEXT
The medical department of MSF’s Operational Center Brussels (OCB) provides strategic direction and technical leadership, committed to keeping abreast of innovations in healthcare. He shares responsibility for operational choices and responsiveness, and participates in supporting our project teams by jointly developing medico-operational strategies adapted to the context and by defining levels of care. The department is made up of several specialists in a network of units around the world and works in collaboration with operations, other OCB departments and the MSF movement.
MSF OCB has a growing number of hospitals with an increased number of beds, a volume of activities, a complexity of care and increasing technicality; the OCB wants to invest to ensure adequate, sustainable and good quality nursing care.
As a Mobile Implementation Officer (MIO) in Nursing Care, specializing in neonatology/paediatrics or operating theater, you will provide direct technical support to project nurses, in collaboration with the Nursing Care referent.
RESPONSIBILITES
As a Nursing MIO specializing in neonatology/paediatrics or operating theater, you will provide technical support to nurses and nursing managers at the project level. All areas of focus will be addressed in collaboration with project teams to empower them to maintain and continuously improve safe, effective and person-centred care.
Your main responsibilities are:
- Assess current nursing practices and prepare comprehensive, contextualized and prioritized improvement plans in collaboration with nursing teams and project supervisors
- Promote and train in the use of patient safety and quality improvement tools, and instill a culture of evidence-based quality improvement and a culture of patient safety learning
- Ensure nurses have access to standard nursing resources and support the implementation of protocols, guidelines, medical devices and practice changes, with monitoring of roll-out and impact
- Optimize the planning and organization of activities related to nursing care, including the coordination of care activities, the management of human resources and the maintenance of effective interactions between the various departments
- Coach and train nurses, head nurses and directors of nursing/nursing operations managers, provide targeted training and support a training schedule for the department
Depending on their specialization in neonatology/paediatrics or operating theatre, the Nursing MIO will focus on holistic care in neonatology and pediatrics with particular attention to medication safety, or patient safety and flow in the operating room , in the recovery room and in the post-anaesthetic care unit, with optimal interdepartmental interaction.
PREREQUIS
Education and experience
- Registered nurse, diploma in nursing or license in nursing required
- Specialization in neonatal/pediatric nursing or operating room nursing required
- Clinical experience in neonatal/pediatric care in second level care or operating room/perioperative nursing within the last 2 years required
- 3 years of experience with MSF or a comparable organization in low- or middle-income countries and/or humanitarian settings
- Critical care or emergency room experience is an asset

- Good communication skills: active listening, clear and effective communication, sense of diplomacy
- Proven skills in training, coaching and mentoring
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships
- Ability to analyze and synthesize multiple information
- Rigorous, organized, able to prioritize and work within agreed deadlines
- Great cultural sensitivity and adaptability
LANGUAGES
- Good command of oral and written communication in French and English required
- Fluency in Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic or other languages spoken within MSF missions is an asset
Others
- Willingness to travel abroad in difficult conditions, in sometimes dangerous and remote places
CONDITIONS
- Start date: As soon as possible
- Location*: Brussels (Belgium), Nairobi (Kenya) or Abidjan (Ivory Coast). Other locations where there is an MSF entity could be discussed.
- Mobility up to 70% on projects
- Type of contract: Fixed term contract – Full time
- Contract duration: 1 year
- Salary according to the MSF-OCB field salary grid
- Medical insurance covered 100% according to the international package – 45 days of paid leave
- The contractual conditions will be established according to the location, administrative/legal constraints and in compliance with the job grids and MSF salary policies.

*The final outcome depends on the local legal limitations (residency, work permit, etc.) and the agreement with the host MSF entity of the places mentioned or envisaged.
